“Asiong” romps off with major awards but “Enteng” rules box-office tally

The controversial entry that almost did not make it to the 2011 Metro Manila Film romped off with an impressive 11 awards thus emerging as the runaway winner in the three-day filmfest.

“Manila Kingpin: The Asiong Salonga Story” that  stars Jeorge “ER” Estregan tells the story of Tondo’s Nicasio Salonga, dubbed the “Robinhood of Philippine Underworld” in the ’50s.

The movie won the coveted Best Picture and Gatpuno Antonio J. Villegas Cultural Awards, Best Festival Director (Gary dela Cruz), Best Supporting Actor (John Regala), Best Screenplay (Roi Iglesias and Rey Ventura), Best Cinematography (Carlo Mendoza), Best Production Design (Fritz Siloria, Mona Soriano and Ronaldo Cadapan), Best Theme Song (“La Paloma” by Ely Buendia), Best Musical Score (Jerry Lazaten), Best Sound Recording (Mike Idioma), and Best Editing (Jason Canapay and Ryan Orduna).

The Best Actor plum was however won by Dingdong Dantes (for “Segunda Mano”). The other winners include Maricel Soriano (Best Actress for “Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow”), and Eugene Domingo (Best Supporting Actress for “My Househusband”).

Meanwhile, Vic Sotto and Ai Ai de las Alas live up to their titles Box Office King and Queen respectively as their joint comic venture “Enteng ng Ina Mo” ruled the 2011 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) box-office tally with over P91 million.

In second place is “Ang Panday 2” (Imus Productions and GMA Network) with over P51 million, followed by the Kris Aquino-Dingdong Dantes horror starrer “Segunda Mano” (Star Cinema/MJM Productions) with a take of close to P47 million. Regal Films’ “Shake, Rattle & Roll” (all-star cast) is at No. 4 with over P22 million, closely followed by Octo Arts Films’ “My Househusband: Ikaw Na!” (starring Ryan Agoncillo and Judy Ann Santos), with more than P20 million.

“Manila Kingpin: The Untold Story of Asiong Salonga” (Scenema Concept International) and “Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow” (Regal Films) finished 6th and 7th with P7 and P4 million, respectively.
