‘AlDub’ fever conquers social media as EB ratings soars

The “AlDub” kalyeserye romance is indeed a certified hit.

On a recent Saturday episode, a record-breaking 600,000 posts flooded Twitter with hash tag #AlDubWeBelongTogether. The ratings for “Eat Bulaga,” aired by GMA 7 also soared to 32.4 percent, compared to its rival show “It’s Showtime” on ABS-CBN which posted 16.6 percent.

That record-breaker was registered during the episode which featured the aborted wedding of Yaya Dub to Frankie Arinolli, played by Jose Manalo. Yaya Dub fainted at the altar thus once again preventing her face-to-face encounter with actor Alden Richards. On- and off-camera, Alden and Yaya Dub have yet to meet and only get to interact onscreen during their segment on the noontime show.

Yaya Dub, or Nicomaine Dei “Maine” Mendoza in real life is a culinary arts graduate from De La Salle-College of St. Benilde. She wants to become a flight stewardess but fate intervened when she made waves online doing Dubsmash, a mobile app used to create selfie videos. Eventually she was casted as Yaya Dub, the nanny of Wally Bayola’s character, Lola Nidora, in the “Juan For All, All For Juan” segment of “Eat Bulaga”.

Malou Choa-Fagar, senior vice president and chief operations officer of Tape Inc., producer of “Eat Bulaga,” attributed the success of the “AlDub” romance to the story’s unpredictability. She added that it’s a fairy tale set in a nearby neighborhood instead of in a faraway kingdom.
