‘Corazon’ grosses P40M, tops local box office

The film about the love story of a married couple during the times of Japanese rule bested two international movies enroute to claiming the top spot in local box office over the weekend.

The Star Cinema-produced horror film “Corazon: Ang Unang Aswang,” was released on March 14 and initially debuted at second place with P 20,517,124. The movie grossed a total of P 10,441,210 during the latest box office weekend tally on March 21-25, bringing its total earnings to P 40,421,214.

The recently-released worldwide hit, “The Hunger Games.” which opened last March 22, was at third spot with P 6,205,172, a notch below “John Carter” with P 8,093,129.

The science fiction action-drama film “The Hunger Games” is directed by Gary Ross and based on the novel of the same name by Suzanne Collins. Likewise, “John Carter” is a science fiction action film and marks the live-action debut of director/writer Andrew Stanton.

“Corazon” was in direct competition with GMA Films’ “My Kontrabida Girl’ which was also released on the same date. The latter could only manage sixth place with weekend earnings of P 3,286,853. It however earned the distinction of being the only other local flick which made it to the list’s top 14 movies dominated by foreign-made films.
