Epy Quizon wins best actor title in New York


Epy Quizon won the best actor award at the 2015 International Film Festival Manhattan held in New York City for his performance in the 2014 Singaporean satirical drama “Unlucky Plaza.”

In Unlucky Plaza, Quizon plays Onassis Hernadez, a Filipino single-father who’s strained with the responsibilities of taking care of his son and saving his family’s ailing restaurant business in Singapore. A series of events leads him to take a ragtag group of people hostage which include the sketchy motivational speaker Sky (Adrian Pang), his jaded wife Michelle (Judee Tan), relentless loan shark Baby Bear (Guo Liang) and young pastor Tong Wen (Shane Mardjuki).

Actress Aiko Melendez were also recognized at the annual film festival, which aims to honor “entertaining and diverse films in all genres” to equal the diversity found in New York City.

Other winners include the cast of the Joel Lamangan’s “Lihis” for Best Ensemble, “Sundalong Kanin” by Janice O’ Hara for Best Feature Film, and Albert Chan Paran his work on the short film “Julie.”

Meanwhile, “Yolanda,” which was directed by Krizia May Villanueva and Jennlyn Castillejo, nabbed Best Student Film.
