Jessica Sanchez joins AI’s Top 5

Filipino-Mexican singer Jessica Sanchez escapes another elimination round and is now among “American Idol” season 11’s Top 5 joining Joshua Ledet, Phillip Phillips, Skylar Laine and Hollie Cavanagh.

A day before, the 16-year-old contender from San Diego got mixed reviews from the judges for her performance of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” and another song of choice for the second round..

AI judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez praised the young singer’s Queen performance but added that rock is not her forte. Randy Jackson for his part said he loved the rendition adding that Jessica can sing anything because of her beautiful voice.

Despite their restrained raves, the judges were unanimous in their praise for Jessica’s performance of Luther Vandross’ “Dance With My Father.”

During the show’s elimination night last April 26 (April 27, Manila time) host Ryan Seacrest declared Jessica as the first “safe” contestant. Elise Testone who was among the “bottom three” with Skylar Laine and Hollie Cavanagh, was eliminated.

Two weeks ago, Jessica almost got the exit axe after getting the least votes but the judges unanimously opted to save her.
