Latina beauty is Miss Earth 2013

Alyz Henrich of Venezuela was crowned Miss Earth 2013 on Saturday during the finals night held at Versailles Alabang in Las Piñas.

Henrich, whose advocacy is the conservation of the Los Roques chain of islands in her native country, bested over 80 beauties around the world. The Miss Earth title marks the second major win for Venezuela, in international beauty competitions this year. Only last month, another Venezuelan beauty, Gabriela Isler, clinched the Miss Universe crown.

The other major winners were Miss Korea Catharina Choi, Miss Earth Fire; Miss Thailand Punika Kulsoontornrut, Miss Earth Water; and Miss Austria Katia Wagner, Miss Earth Air.

The Filipino candidate Angelee De los Reyes finished in the top 8 alongside the delegates of Austria, Mexico, Korea, Thailand, Venezuela, Serbia and Poland.  The 26-year-old De los Reyes, who is also a registered nurse, impressed the judges and the audience with her pitch to save the Earth, not just for the people of today, but for generations to come.

Prior to the coronation night, the candidates took part in relief efforts for the survivors of “Yolanda.” The Miss Earth candidates also planted trees and toured the country as earth ambassadors.

The Philippines-based international pageant, whose slogan is “beauties for a cause,” has been held in the country annually since 2001, except in 2010 when Vietnam hosted the finals night.
