Lea Salonga gives nod on Jessica Sanchez playing Kim

International performer Lea Salonga strongly approves of “American Idol” runner-up Jessica Sanchez playing the lead character Kim in the reported movie adaptation of “Miss Saigon.”

In a TV interview, Salonga said Jessica’s singing talent and pretty face would serve her well in giving justice to the role.

“Miss Saigon” tells the story of an American GI who left behind his Vietnamese bar girl lover during the Vietnam War in the ’70s. The original West End (1989) and Broadway (1991) productions of the hit play both starred Salonga as Kim. The role earned for her numerous recognitions including the prestigious Tony and Laurence Olivier awards.

Although nothing has been confirmed yet, Sanchez’s name reportedly crop up in the casting rumors for said role. Rumors of a “Miss Saigon” film have apparently been talked about since 2009. The Internet Movie Database (IMDb) listed the film as “in development” and its release year as 2012.

The camp of Sanchez has yet to issue a statement about the matter.
