Regine Velasquez mourns father’s death

Asia’s songbird Regine Velasquez-Alcasid and her family are grieving the death of her father Gerardo ‘Mang Gerry’ Velasquez who died on Monday after he was rushed to the hospital. He was 76.

Last year Mang Gerry’s health started to deteriorate. He was hospitalized several times and was confined for almost three months. Regine said that his father’s sickness brought the whole family closer. It also made her value family time more.

The singer-actress shared a tight bond with Mang Gerry who trained and molded her singing style and skills by immersing her neck-deep in water while vocalizing when she was young.

Mang Gerry also accompanies her when she was just starting her singing career. He had helped Regine choose some of her competition songs on “Ang Bagong Kampeon,” the 80’s TV talent search that launched her into stardom. He was always known to be a stage father, but he stayed away from the limelight throughout her career.

The “Leader of the Band” by Dan Fogelberg was known to be Mang Gerry’s favorite song which Regine performed for her father at her 25th anniversary concert last year.

According to Regine’s husband, Ogie Alcasid, Mang Gerry’s remains will be at the Manila Memorial Park in Plaridel, Bulacan. Interment date hasn’t been announced.
